A very nice acoustic show. The 'Fresh & Vital' impro is a sort of a funny 'Kevin Coyne Declaration of Principles':
"I could have been a superstar but I chose to be who I am
I was offered various jobs, I could have joined the Doors you know (it's absolutly true)
But I simply refused
I could have been on the Virgin Record label for the rest of my life
If I had cleaned Richard Branson's car and behaved and become a Thatcherite
But I simply refused
And I'm really glad to be who I am" [...]

*
"Tragedy" is a song by Gerald H. Nelson and Fred B. Burch. A recording of the song by Thomas Wayne and the DeLons rose to #5 on the Billboard Top 100 in 1959. A 1961 cover version by The Fleetwoods rose to #10 on the charts. Brian Hyland also recorded it in 1969, but it only made it to #56. (Wikipedia)

    OFFICIAL CD: BURNING HEAD IMAGE

Edition Multiart EM 1 Golden Hind (a label of Rockport Records distributed by Rough Trade) 1992.

Recorded Jan-Feb 1992, Aquarium Studios, Nuremberg, Germany.

Limited edition CD (1000 copies). Each CD was numbered and signed by Kevin Coyne and came with an original signed painting on handmade paper. Very expensive at the time (DM350 at the beginning, then DM95, for a 1999 end of sale bargain...). Check this page about Burning Head artwork.

Three songs (*) are alternate mixes from the TOUGH AND SWEET CD.

Produced by Hans Pukke.

Kevin Coyne with Hans Pukke (guitar, keyboards) and Robert Coyne (Kevin Coyne's son, lead guitar on two songs).

Cover drawing by Kevin Coyne.

350DM! Total rip-off. Wonder how many were finally sold. The music though gets better, many great songs: "Hope the Devil don't Come", "Totally Naked". Although Pukke plays every instrument, Coyne signs a number of songs, played almost solo. This album also marks the first recordings with Robert Coyne.

Golden Hind (a label of Rockport Records distributed by Rough Trade) 388.7017.242, May 1995

Recorded Jan-Feb 1995 at Studio M Digital, Nuremberg, Germany, executive producer Bernd Gruber

Produced by Friedl Pohrer and Kevin Coyne

Kevin Coyne with Friedrich Pohrer (guitar, bass, drum program, keyboards, backing vocals, tambourine), Manferd and Norbert (backing vocals), Werner Steinhauser (drums), Henry Beck (organ), Willi Pichl (oboe), Keili Keilhofer (guitar)

Cover drawing by Kevin Coyne

Lyrics included

"THE ADVENTURES OF CRAZY FRANK evolved into an improvised stage musical about the life of English comedian Frank Randle featuring Kevin Coyne as Randle and Nuremberg dancer and singer Julia Kempken as his wife. It was performed in Germany and Austria" (Ruf Records brochure).

A photo ok Kevin performing "The Adventures of Crazy Franck" with Julia Kempken and Keili Keilhofer; given by Nuremberg musician Horst Spandler. See more photos here
Here are some recollections of the show by Horst: "Here is what I know about the Crazy Frank Rock Theatre.
Here the front page of a flyer distributed
to promote the Nuremberg show. The play premired on November 10th, 1995 in Gelnhausen, Germany. There was another show on the 25th of January in Itzehoe. After his England tour in February, the play was staged in a hall of the Nuremberg central station, which was used for concerts and other events
in those times. Actually it was part of a greater project that included readings from his Teddy Bear book and from Paradise as well as an exhibition of some of his pictures. There were four performances of the play on successive days, starting on March 20th. The whole thing was part of the German Railway (DB) cultural program and done in cooperation with the leading Nuremberg newspaper.

I attentended one of the readings , whicht took place in the Art Nouveau room of the train station, and afterwards one of the theatre shows. Helmi was also present.. You didn't need to know anything about Frank Randle to understand what was going on ( i.e. if your English wasn't too bad, because the play was in the English language). As far as I remember, there wasn't a chronological plot, just several episodes loosely spun together. The set was always the same - a living room equipped with a number of objects in an antique 50s style. There were only two characters, Randal and his wife. The play showed episodes from theyr married life, which was difficult, because his life as an artist and his drinking habit clashed with what his wife wanted out of life.
The moods often changed between depressive, aggressive, cheerful etc. It was hard to tell which parts of the play were improvised and which ones not. In between the scenes the Paradise Band played and Kevin performed his songs. There weren't too many people in the audience, I think the hall was only half full.

I seem to remember that Kevin told me that he had to change the actress, because the other one was in a stage of pregnancy that made it impossible for her to continue the show. He highly praised the ability of this actress (or both?) to correspond with him during the improvised parts. It escapes my mind though, if he talked of any plans for other performances of the play.

• The Pere Ubu song Planet of Fools on their EREWHON CD is "based on an original idea by Kevin Coyne" ("The World is full of Fools"). Kevin had, in 1999 toured the UK on a double bill with David Thomas, Pere Ubu's singer,).
Said Thomas in an interview: "Kevin Coyne sang in one of his songs "The world is full of fools, but it does not make thel bad people". The line was sort of an intellectual inspiration for me, and when I steal an idea, I just say it. In particular with a man like Kevin Coyne. I am a big fan of Kevin Coyne."
Here are the lyrics:
Every day I think about some better world
I know that this one's not the one it's supposed to be and I've concluded that somewhere past Mars is a planet of fools
I know Somewhere past Mars there's a planet of fools
I know, but nobody will talk about it,
Somehow there's been a slip in the time and space continuum
I'm convinced because I woke up one day and nothing made a speck of sense anymore and every day I think about a better world I conclude that somewhere past Mars is a planet of fools
I know Somewhere past Mars is a planet of fools that I know
Oh, why should we live here in tears, in tears?
Why should we live here in tears?
I know they're not bad people but I'd like to go home now, if it's all the same to you, Dear NASA
Somewhere past Mars is the planet of fools I know
Somewhere past Mars there's a planet of fools
Oh, why must we live here in tears, in tears?
Why should we live here in tears?

• BOOTLEG TAPE: BLUE MONDAY

Oct 03 1998

120:00

"Unfortunately, the Blue Monday show is with Kevin Coyne's German blues revue band... but it is something to have.. It is a little distorted too." (Chris Plummer)

This compilation album BLUE MONDAY CONCERTS '98: BLUE VISION feat. a live Saviour recorded live at Blue Monday (98)

Gary Lucas said he and Kevin recorded 5 unreleased tracks in a studio in Nurnberg in October 1998 in the midst of Lucas' solo European tour (Gary had played guitar on KNOCKING ON YOUR BRAIN). Says Lucas: "Great songs titled "Clockwork Pudding", "High Stakes Mama", "Little Custard Pie" (variation of the previous track), "Our Little Corner of the World", "My Dark Little Corner" (a variation of the track before it), and "You Don't Believe Me At All" (wonderful song)."
In 2011, Lucas put up four songs to listen on this web page (unavailable anywere else)
:
Clockwork Pudding , High Stakes Mama , Our Little Corner of the World and You Don't Believe Me At All

• BOOK: Kevin Coyne (and Siren) is along with 60 other artists in Richie Unterberger' "Unknown Legends of Rock'n'Roll", (1998), foreword by Lenny Kaye (Patti Smith Group). The book came with a 12-track CD (no Kevin Coyne). Back cover art is the first Siren LP photo. An excellent book with loads of other amazing bands (and a great interview of Young Marble Giants' Stuart Moxham).

GOOD BOY is the name of a modern dance performance by Alain Buffard (France, 1998). Here are 2 articles about the show (thanks Nicolas for the info). Good Boy was later played in New York in April 2006. It was now called "Mauvais Genre" and premiered at Danspace Project at St. Mark's Church, "performed by a number of the city's downtown dance luminaries."

Resurrection! ("My honest record in many years"). After his longest gap between two recordings (3 years), Kevin Coyne leaves Rockport for Ruff Records. The change is perfect. Robert Coyne helps a lot with his minimalist style (a relief after the Hans "all those notes" Pukke and Henri "where is my synths" Beck years. It is also the return of weird-avant-garde songwriting.

Chris Plummer had asked Kevin a song by song comment for his site: 1 2 3
Keili Keilhofer said he wrote songs for the album, they were recorded but did not appear.

Jun 10 1999

"Publishing company Imschoot, specialized in expensive art books, has published a book in coopereration with Belgian singer Arno under the title "Arno, A White Ass European Cowboy", although "book" might be a poor description of the thing at hand here. The pages are made of vinyl-records (cut out in rectangular shape, it's not the goal to play them on a pick-up). On these records there are the labels of 17 albums that Arno has selected as being very important in his life (including Bob Dylan, The Ventures, Dr. John, Tom Z, P.I.L., Kevin Coyne [Marjory Razorblade], Sonny Boy Williamson, Rod Stewart, Jacques Dutronc, Humple Pie and Robert Wyatt). These labels can be unfolded and hide 34 mostly unpublished photos. () The goal of this publication is clearly aimed at becoming a collector's item : it exists in four modes (black and red vinyl, unsigned or signed + numbered) that will be published between 10 and 3000 copies and will cost between 4.500 and 1.500 franks (223-37 euro). It can be bought at the "better book- & cd-store" at Imschoot uitgevers, Burggravenlaan 20, 9000 Gent, tel 09/222.55.08, fax 09/222.55.07."
(This from The Belgian Pop and Rock Archives) IMAGE

By the way, Arno has a song called "Les yeux de ma mre" ("My Mother's Eyes')
