THE 80's

Nice acoustic session with an early Pointing the Finger with extra lyrics. But the sound is not too good.

• BOOTLEG CDR: MIDLAND THEATRE GROUP, NOTTIGHAM, JAN 21 1980 "PINKY" Image

Kevin Coyne reads poetry and sings 2 songs, with Bob Ward (special effects on electric guitar).

I love this one, a very rare solo performance. Best Fat Girl ever.

1980 is a bad year: Kevin Coyne goes though a nervous breakdown (see his liner notes on POINTING THE FINGER); the next album (with his frightening artwork) follows the mood:

CD release: Virgin CDV 2152, released in 1991

Fascinating. Again, new musicians who come from a jazz/jazz rock background and take the music in another new direction. A personal favorite.

In 2004, Brian Godding told (on his website) about the recording of 'Bubbles'. Extract:

"Kevin said heÕd like to continue the musical relationship at the end of the run of gigs and invited me to contribute to his next Album for Virgin records so of coarse I was well down for that. At this point I had no idea what he had in mind but I knew it would be something totally different to to what IÕd done before and, it most certainly was! IÕd long given up the desire to writeÕsongsÕ so I assumed that IÕd turn up, plug in and learn a few songs heÕd written but that was not the plan at all! Kevin (well actually Bob [Ward]) booked some studio time and on arriving and setting up Kevin looked at me and said,Ó got any tunes or cord sequencesÓ?-------(!!!!!!) I beg your pardon( I thought!), well, for some reason( probably sheer terror!) I started fiddling around with this little sequence of riffs and cords and KevÕ said, ŅI like that, play it againÓ. So, I play it again, Kevin riffles through a pile of poems and lyrics and starts singing this amazing song over the top of it!! Bloody hell!( me thinks) this is going to be good when we sort it out! ŅGot that on tape BobÓ? Kevin says as we grind to a halt after some time, Bob gives a nod from the control room and we appear to have Ō Learn to swim, learn to drownÕ,the first track for the new album , Bursting Bubbles!!! I said to Kevin that maybe we should do another take at least but he just said ŅwhyÓ? He was of coarse right as this was the way he worked and we made the rest of the album in the same way( he did let me do a few overdubs though, just to keep me happy!) A very spontaneous performer and artist with the ability to pull it off and, of great importance, a very selfless and generous gent!!"

You Can't Kill Us 2:04

CD release (1CD): Virgin CDV 3504, released in 1991.

Record #1 is pure power pop and works quite well; record #2 is very innovative avant-garde with Robert Wyatt.
In 1988, Brian Godding released a great instrumental jazz-rock LP called "Slaughter on Shaftesbury Avenue", recorded for the most part with GLS and where he played some of the themes from Sanity Stomp #2.

Says Kevin about 'Sanity': " I was quite ill when I made that record, as a matter of fact; I was quite mad, basically. ThatÕs why itÕs called Sanity Stomp. I had a nervous breakdown and, ironically, I donÕt want to say ironically...amazingly...I was able to carry on making records. ThatÕs a record I made when I was clinically ninety-five per cent nuts, and the themes are rather odd, but somehow it comes out as sounding all right. IÕm amazed."

Kevin is in a bad mood and has a cold but they play some rare songs from the new LEGLESS IN MANILLA LP.

• FILM: "Schwarzfahrer" aka "Joy Ride", A German film (3 cool losers planing a hold-up) by Manfred Stelzer. Music by Kevin Coyne. Unreleased studio versions of 'Rockin' On' and 'Best Friend' (early version, different from ROMANCE ROMANCE) + some impro. Kevin on acoustic, most likely Steve Lamb on bass. It does sound like outakes from LEGLESS IN MANILLA. Also, an instrumental 'Rockin' On'with saxophone. Great music but most of the time covered by the film sound. 1983.

Very nicely played boot.

Sometimes found as a 2CDR bootleg called SAVIOUR, a good compilation of Netherlands shows from the 80's: an incomplete LEEUWARDEN (Eastbourne Ladies missing) show plus POETRY NIGHT and BRUPOP. Image

There is also a boot called LEEWARDEN T'SCHAAF, HOLLAND 1981-01-19 'LONG LIVE THE KING' with omits the three last songs but adds the three poems from POETRY NIGHT in the middle of the show... Image

In 2003 came a new boot of the Leuwarden show ('Mark 2), beginning with two different versions of Eastbourne Ladies, a fast one then a slow one... which is rather strange in a same show... I'm almost sure the slow Eastbourne Ladies is the one from PUMERENT. Great stuff anyway.

A good acoustic show. Here is a photo of Kevin and Martin in Nurnberg in 1985 (thanks Martin!)

1985: Kevin Coyne moves to Germany, in Nuremberg.

• FILM: Kevin Coyne appears as a non speaking actor in "VA BANQUE" (1985), a French-titled German film by Diethard Küster (who also shot two documentaries about Kevin Coyne) also featuring Willy de Ville. Distributed in 1986, 96mn. English version called "Point of No Return" shown on ITV. The original version was released on video (UFA Video).
Va Banque is an extremly boring German film
featuring Kevin Coyne who plays the non talking part of a usher who appears for about 45 seconds...

"From Kevin's point of view I suspect that the very poor quality of this is its saving grace as he's sounds the worse for wear drink wise. Mind you, from a fan's point of view this is brilliant stuff as he is so funny in a cringing kind of way. No one escapes his wrath from the Poles stealing wellies to Eamon De Velera. Johnny Cash is suddenly turned on and becomes a leather-clad gun-wielding fascist. What is it they say? 'Not for general consumption'." (Erik)

Yeah... Fat Girl is dedicated to Joan Amastrading: "Only woman who looks black and IS black", half of Can't Stand It No More is an harmonica solo, etc.

Most of the unreleased are really improv.

• 2 BOOTLEG CDR: QUARTIER LATIN, BERLIN, GERMANY Image

A Tim Tape (see Credits). Nov 26 1985, source: audience recording, sound OK. Artwork by Kevin Coyne, layout by me.
Kevin Coyne with Zoot Money on keyboards and vocals, Steve Waller (guitar-ex Manfred Mann's Earthband), Denis Bovell (bass-Dub Master with Linton Kwesi Johnson) and Sam Kelly (drums-ex Roger Chapman).

Zoot Money solo on piano: unknown song 2:24

Zoot and Kevin meet again after 6 years and play some old songs... what a treat! That's one hell of a boot! Excellent, rocking, very tight band! Check the guitar solo on One Fine Day or the incredible Irish-gig-rock-solo on Mrs Hooley Go Home... Great backing vocals too (The World is Full of Fools)... although I could do without Zoot's Vocoder. At one point, some guy throws a beer can on the stage and Kevin Coyne sings "Brothers of Mine, Why do you throw things at me?"... A boot totally apart from the others.

The Quartier Latin show can be found on another single CDR boot called "QUARTIER LATIN GERMANY (HELLO LITTLE DOG)" with the following songs (sound is bad): Image

• BOOTLEG CDR: BEI SZENE F Image

FM sound (the CDR is one 30mn track). Radio show recorded on Apr 2 1986 for Szene F ("Die Sendung für die fränkische Musikszene"), Radio F, Nürnberg, Germany. Artwork is an autographed drawing and poem made by Kevin Coyne at the end of the show.

Kevin Coyne with girlfriend Stefanie interviewed by Horst Spandler (who provided the CDR and artwork; thanks Horst! See Credits page).

Show starts with two songs by local musicians Joker and Martin Philippi, then a commercial, then a Kevin Coyne interview (in English). Kevin Coyne talks about his recent coming to Nuremberg; Nico, the baby he recently had with Stefanie (the STUMBLING ONTO PARADISE LP is dedicated to them); the "Angels", a (French) film for which he just recorded the soundtrack that was to be issued by CBS (anyone know something about that one?) and a "techno" album he was to record with a German artist called Wunderworker ("WŠchtersbacher Wunderwerke" and Ralph Ruppert): "something like Kraftwerk meets Stevie Wonder"), of which has surfaced the (infamous) Happy Holiday single.

Songs (both played from the ROUGH album):

House on the Hill 8:06

Singing The Blues (M. Endsley) 3:14

Show ends with local band Van Bluus (singer Horst Spandler, see Credits page).

This compilation (thanks Robert!) is really good and very surprising: the early Paradise Band was very close to the earlier English group (Kirtley, Lamb, Sheen), with Pukke very innovative on effects and synth-guitar. He even plays a bit of Hendrix's "Who Knows" on "Having a Party".

• 2 VARIOUS ARTISTS LP: WAAHNSINN IMAGE

EMI 1C 2LP 164 14 7188 3, 1986

A live album with various German artists recorded Jul 26/27 1986 at a German Rock Festival. Kevin plays Saviour (KC/AL/GS) (5:12) with an unidentified band (probably Pukke, Steinhart and Steffen) then joins fellow musicians for a German hard-rock style cover of Dylan's Like a Rolling Stone (6:26 unreleased), a seemingly drunk Kevin Coyne improvising lyrics ("Everybody says that Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen are real stars... but I didn't want any compromise..."). Weird.

A picture book of the festval, called "WAAHNSINN Delta-Buch", was published by Franz Greno, Nördlingen.

Also, a film by "Delta-Filmverleih, Berlin". Don't know if Coyne appears in the book or film.

Thanks to Horst we have this very rare studio boot with unreleased songs. He made it a special limited and numbered edition for the people on the Kevin Coyne Group. Thanks again Horst! Here are a few words by Horst about this area and particular recording:

"When I met Kevin in 1986 he was down and out, he had left his wife in England and gone to live with Steffi (the mother of his son Nico) and it was a very difficult relationship. He was out of money, he didn't even have a guitar anymore - he had lost it on a trainstation platform when he was drunk. He was struggling with depression and obsession and paranoia caused by his drinking habit. He got into trouble with the police - I remember that he kicked in a glass door at a gas station when he was drunk - he was fined and had to pay for the door and had no money. He didn't have many gigs and if he had one it was usually a one man show at a small venue for little pay and he had to borrow a guitar. He called me up several times and asked me if I could find some gigs or musicians for him. So I introduced him to my amateur band and we worked together for a very short time. I felt that he needed some professional musicians. So I called up Peter Harasim of Concertburo Franken and they fixed him up with some of the best local musicians available at that time who finally became the Paradise Band. The Concertburo payed his rent - they didn't give him any cash, because they feared he would spend it on alcohol. I think the professionalism of the band and the connections of the Concertburo played an important role in getting Kevin back into the music business. I don't dare to think where he might be now without them and - without Helmi."

The strangest boot... I'm quite sure the anouncer is the same as in THE CELLAR TAPES VOLUME 1. The show was recorded in Montpellier, France, for French cultural radio "France Culture". The theme of the show was "La Nuit des Chanteurs de Récits" (The Night of the Singer-Story Tellers) which featured several other artists and was recorded on July 20, 1986 and broadcast on Oct 10. Kevin was supposed to tell a story and sing... He talks a lot about death and the announcer translates in French! Kevin was most certainly drunk and in an improvising mood...

In 1987, Kevin quit drinking.

"A great electric album, with two wonderful rockers, and a feel to it not unlike 1981's fine POINTING THE FINGER album" (J. Falstaff)

IMHO: the beginning of the painful German years: backed with studio musicians wanting to shine alongside a once famous British musician, a disinterested Kevin Coyne gets himself entangled in a middle of the road kind of music... and it's getting worse album after album for some years... Hans Pukke produces, writes the songs, soon he will even be designing the artwork!. Kevin Coyne - who has moved to Germany - looses most of his audience, his records are hard to find... he becomes the "Famous Unknown", a.k.a. "Beautiful Looser". The fans suffer...

"Another excellent electric album.  The Paradise Band really shines throughout"

(J. Falstaff)

IMHO again: even STUMBLING ONTO PARADISE seems listenable compared to this one... For a good shortcut, just check Beck's keyboard solo on the title song...

Ramblin' Operator 2:55

(released on BRIDGE ST ARTS CENTER boot).

Recorded Aug 18 1988, first broadcast Sep 1 1988 (Andy Kershaw), Robert Coyne (guitar).

Read this about this BBC session: 'UNCLIPPED COYNE'. On Chairman's Ball, Coyne added overdubs of his reading of 'Edelweiss' from the sound of music; said KC: "I did'nt want them to forget that it's a song about a dance in a mental hospital".
