KEVIN
COYNE LYRICS - E
Eastbourne
Ladies (Kevin Coyne - 1973) (MARJORY
RAZORBLADE)
You're
always on your own, sitting on those seaside chairs on your own, everybody
there just passes you by
Nobody
seems to care if you flash your underwear, no, I don't tell no
lie
Your
vested days are done now you know you're on the run, oh lady why why?
Your
white and powdered face, you need some holy grace to pull yourself
right back again
Chorus:
Eastbourne
Ladies with your hair done up so nice
Eastbourne
Ladies with your tea and lemon ice, lemon ice.
I think
you need something new but you don't know just what to do, croquet on
the lawn yet again
You smile
at passing boys, you can't offer any joys, you don't understand young men
Got your
money in the bank, money in the bank, now let's be franck, I want more than
ten thousands pounds
I want
everything you've got, I want the lot, give me give me give me give me all
you got, oh help me, I need some, I'm so poor now
Chorus
So I
wander round the town looking into rooms for you up and down, I
see you everywhere
I believe
I have choice, I believe I made my choice, come here old lady ??
Fifty years
upon the beach, you should be tanned by now, you're out of reach, I hope I
don't bring you down
Everything
special about you, your pearls, your jewels and your money too, oh do
you wear a crown when you go to bed now?
Chorus
[last
verse not on cd, thanks to Rob Olver for that info]:
So now
the day is done, the sun disappears and it starts to run
Oh the
darkness creeps around
Moonlight
sings and moonlight dreams, nothing to see, you make me ??
As I
watch you tottering round this town
Nobody
there, nobody there to care, you're ??, who really cares
I'll
hold you tight maybe, maybe for a year
When
the day, the day is done, all my heart it starts to run
Overflows
on your plate, you'd better eat it all, eat it, eat it, eat it
Chorus
Echooos
Part 1 (Kevin Coyne/Achim Goettert - 1993) (MANSION
OF DREAMS)
I
was born one night about twelve o'clock
I came
to this world playing cool guitar
Papa
sticked around striking out his chest
He said
that little boy looks a mess
He's
crazy, crazy, quite crazy, quite crazy
Mama
mama mama, where are you now?
Mama
mama mama mama, where are you now?
I need
some help, I need some somehow
Mama
mama mama mama, where are you now?
Crazy,
crazy, boy is crazy
There's
a big star up high for me (x2)
Silver
balloons, dangling down high over clouds, those sparkle of a cloud
Balloons
dangling down
He's
crazy, what's he talking about? (x2)
He's
crazy (x2)
I don't
mind, he's crazy, I don't mind
Echooos

A
letter from Hell on pieces of pink paper (x2)
No stamp

A
letter from Hell on pieces of pink paper (x2)
I got
a letter from Hell and when I opened it I got a shock
There
was no adress to write back to
A
letter from Hell (x2)
Somebody's
monkeying around with my mind (x6)
A
letter from Hell on pink paper
A
letter from Hell
A
letter from Hell on pieces of pink paper, no adress
No-one
to to write back to
This
must be Hell, not so bad really, it's a bit dark, it's okay

Einstein
Song (the) (Kevin Coyne - 1999) (ROOM
FULL OF FOOLS)
The boy's
got funny eyes and legs like sticks (x2)
The boy's
got a nose like a carrot and he's often sick (x2)
His mother
says 'You're seventeeen, you should stop your dirty tricks (x2)
But I
tell her, I keeep on telling her, 'He's so young (x2)
One day
he could turn out to be the chosen one'
And the
boy wants to drive a car and run old people down (x2)
The boy
wants to curse and swear in the church on Sunday
He wants
to drop abomb on his school most Mondays
But I
keep on telling his mother, 'He'll improve, he'll turn out to be a credit
to you' (x2)
She doesn't
believe me (x4)
The boy
says he's crazy, he's mad but he's feeeling like a saint (x2)
But Jesus
Christ he certainly ain't (x2)
I tell
his mother, 'He'll be a credit to you one day (x2)
That
son of mine is going to take your breath away
Eisenhower/Churchill
Blues (the) (Kevin Coyne/Brendan Croker - 2002) (LIFE
IS ALMOST WONDERFUL)
Ah
it's written in the wind, it's written in the stars
One day
soon, we'll all gonna fly to Mars
Take
a rocket ship, boogie high into the clouds, into the clouds
I've
lost that Eisenhower/Churchill grey feeling, I want to shout it out loud,
I'm feeling good
Now in
the future everybody will learn to jump and jive
They'll
fell good like they got a ticklish feeling deep inside
No more
doom or gloom, no more church and no more school, no more school
I don't
mind if I'm just a ill-educated ruffian fool, just a fool
Now I
may be blessed and I may be cursed
What
I might tell you might even make it worse
But it
can't be worser than the feeling that you had before
All that
doom and gloom, all that Eisenhower/Churchill foolishness won't get you no
more, no more
There's
an atom bomb out there, you don't give a damn
You're
not gonna crouch under your desk, I want you to understand
Nothing's
gonna happen, the Lord above will probably protect you, it's sure he will
Because
in this life you're meant to enjoy, you don't have to be cute
I got
it right, I got it right, there's all day and there's no night (x2)
I lost,
I lost those Eisenhower/Churchill lowdown blue
I've
lost them and I'm glad, I've lost them, you know that I'm glad, Alleluia!
Elvira
(Kevin Coyne - 1979) (ELVIRA
)
I'm
just an actress, but I sang a song, gave you something to think about, I hope
I'm just
an actress, singing a song, I gave you something to think about, I gave you
something to think about, I gave you something to hold on, hold on to
Elvira,
Elvira, what did they do? They left you so lonely and I'm lonely too, thinking
of you
I'm just
an actress, singing a song and calling on spirits, spirits so strong
Look
at me and Elvira looks back, she was one of a million and a millions look
back
Elvira,
Elvira, what did they do? They left you lonely and I'm lonely too, thinking,
thinking of you
I'm just
an actress, I talk to you, you have to hear me, what I say is true
I've
been inside her, I've found her head and it wasn't so different from mine,
wasn't so different from mine, so sing, sing, sing
Elvira,
Elvira, what did they do? They left you so lonely and I'm lonely too, thinking
of you
One more
for Elvira
Elvira,
Elvira, what did they do? They left you so lonely and we're lonely too, thinking
of you
But times
must change
Elvis
Is Dead (Henry Beck/Kevin
Coyne - 1993) (TOUGH
AND SWEET)
Elvis
is dead, yapping like a hound dog, Elvis is dead (x2),
looking for his mummy, yapping like a hound dog, looking for his mummy
Down
at the Heartbreak Hotel, there's the smell of old wine in the cellar and out
at the front there's a pink cadillac with a man in the back, smoking a big
cigar, singing "Mystery Train"
Elvis
is dead (x2), looking for his mummy, Elvis is dead (x2), yapping like a hound
dog, looking for his mummy, yapping like a hound dog
There's
a blue Kentucky moon, it's shining like a star, shining like a big balloon
above the city, Las Vegas at night, I can feel the feelings just right, money
cascading from the machine, I can feel that teenage dream, Elvis is here,
he gives me a beer, he gives me a smile, that old hound dog
Looking
for his mummy, yapping like a hound
Since
you've gone away, I've got a mess of blues, I've got it right down to my blue
suede shoes, I've got a mark upon my head, it says I'm dead, it says I'm dead,
I can see the signs above, I can see you living in the land of love, your
mother's smiling, I'm joining you, my wings are flapping, you tell the truth
Looking
for his mummy, yapping like a hound dog
Baby
let me be your teddy bear, I wanna know, I want you to know I care, I care
about you, even though you're long away in the land of blue, I can see your
face on the bedroom wall, hear you calling, hear your call, can hear you singing
late at night, everything's gonna be all right
Yapping
like a hound, looking for his mummy
Las Vegas
night, it's gonna be all right, Cadillac car, superstar (repeat)
Elvis
is dead
Emperor's
New Clothes (Kevin Coyne - 1992) (BURNING
HEAD)
Saw
you walking in the street today with another guy
He was
full of muscles and he had a tussle
He blacked
my eye (x2)
Chorus:
Why I got involved with you, nobody really knows
Seems
like a classic case of the emperor's new clothes.
Went
round to your house to see if you'd apologise
Your
mother she slapped me in the mouth
Said
it's just a lot of lies, just a lot of lies
Chorus
I'm living
on my own right now, I do all my own cooking
I'm not
looking for anybody, no, I'm not really looking
I'm quite
proud of my cooking
Why I
got involved with you, nobody really knows
Just
a classic case of the emperor's new clothes
Why I
got involved with anyone, nobody really knows
Seems
like a classic case of the emperor's new clothes
Life's
a myth, love's a myth, give us a kiss (x2)
Life's
a myth, love's a myth, somebody give me a kiss

England
is Dying (Kevin Coyne - 1977) (single)
We
are worried and our heads are torn
We act
like babies that are hardly been born
We will
survive
We're
still alive
England
is dying but I want to be there
Yes England
is dying, please tell her I care
The duke
and the duchess close down the house
Burn
all the ??, every squirrel, every mouse
But we
will survive
Because
we're still alive
England
is dying but I want to be there
Yes England
is dying, please tell her I care
Oh England
is dying but I want to be there
Yes England
is dying, please tell her I care
We wander
on sea shores with nothing to say
Faceless
and nameless waiting for a happy day
Yes but
we must survive
Because
we're still alive
England
is dying but I want to be there
Yes England
is dying, please tell her I care
We are
worried and our heads are torn
We are
like babies that are hardly been born
We will
survive
Because
we're alive
England
is dying but I want to be there
England
is dying, please tell her I care
English
Rose (Gary Lucas/Kevin Coyne - 1996) (KNOCKING
ON YOUR BRAIN)
Wasted
winter under lamplights, I'm waiting for your train
No-one's
coming, empty carriage, when will you be back again?
You've
drifted away, you wandered away (x2)
Heart
beleagured, full of sadness, will it always be this way?
Chorus:
You were my English rose, the apple of my eye (x2)
Where's
the sweetness? Where's the lightness? (x2)
Gilded
angel, wandering lonely, through the great big city streets
Staring
far away, staring far away, nobody's eyes you meet
You wandered
far away, you drifted far away (x2)
I love
you, you must know, I'd do anything for you
Chorus
(x4)
Where's
the sweetness? Where's the lightness? (x4)
Only
a vision like you could break this heart in two, lead him astray, make him
lose the days and long for peace
Everybody
Says (Kevin Coyne - 1973) (MARJORY
RAZORBLADE)
Everybody
says, yes, I'll be flying high one day (x2)
But it's
not easy, not easy to change
When
you've always seen the world in color of black and grey
Everybody
says, yes, hold your hands right up and smile (x2)
But I'm
not smiling although I try
Show
me the wretched of the world and I am liable to cry
Everybody
says, yes, why do you always weep and moan (x2)
It's
because I don't expect a change
I've
gone round this ballroom so many times now I can't dance
So everybody
says, yes, believe in yourself now, try and try
Kiss
your best friend, kiss him long
I will
try to kiss him but I won't feel so very strong
I'm weakening
now, I'm weakening down
Yes I'm
weakening, falling around, bury my head once again into that solid barren
ground
Everybody's
Got Somebody (Kevin Coyne - 1990) (BRIDGE
STREET)
Everybody
loves somebody but they don't love me (x2)
Standing by
traffic lights late at night
Mouth
full of old junk food
But nobody
nobody loves me
Everybody's
got a girl friend except little me
Some
have got wives with blonde hair, piroxyde but not me
Others have
got washing hanging on their lines
Little rosy
socks, divine
Everybody's
got somebody but not me
Everybody's
got stereo except me
Everybody's
walking round clutching cds
Everybody
looks so happy with a smile
I've
got hemorroids and I've got piles
I'm diseased,
that's my fortune, that's me
Everybody,
everybody votes (Who wrote this bloody song? Non sense really! Carry on)
Everybody
admires Bob Dylan except poor me
They
got Frank Zappa, all his collection on cd
They
admire, they admire every one
But I
can't find anyone to admire except one little person in the world
And that's
me
Maybe
that's why I'm so alone but I don't care (x2)
One day
soon, I'll find the right one
She'll
come in with a tommy gun
Clear
out the kitchen and say, say:
"Kevin,
it's about time you stop fooling around and married me"
All right
darling, I agree
Everybody's
Naked
(Hans Pukke/Kevin Coyne - 1988) (EVERYBODY'S
NAKED)
Bedside
manners, they're no good
Don't
you know I'm made ot flesh and blood
Feeling
easy in the dark
Feeling
good, feeling sharp
Feeling
wonderful, feeling good (four times)
Chorus:
Hey, it's ok, there' nothing more to say
Hey,
it's ok, everybody's naked in their way.
It's
a natural feeling It've got right now
I can't
lose it, no way, no how
Hey where
am I? Could be on Mars
Got me
rolling and a tumbling like a superstar
Chorus
Feel
so wonderful, feel so good (four times)
Hey there's
nothing, nothing more to say, all is clear and all is ok
There's
nothing more, nothing more to say
Hey,
everybody's naked in their way (repeat)
Turn
on the lights, turn off the lights, it's alright, everybody's naked in their
way (ad lib)
Everytime
I See Your Face (Kevin Coyne - 1990) (BRADFORD)
Everytime
I see your face, I wonder why you love me (x2)
Much better
looking than me, so far over me
Everytime
I see your face, I wonder why you care
Everytime
I see your face, I go in a fit of passion
Everytime
I see your face, I get more than my ration
Everytime
I see your face, I have a little inner swimming fist
Everytime
I see your face, I love you honey cause you're ??
Although
you stole my car and you took away the house and the children
And you
forced me to live in penury with at least half a douzen german women
Everytime
I see your face, I get memories all over
Everytime
I see your face, I love you more than ever
Everytime
I see your face, I'm so proud of you
Everytime
I see your face, I know I deserved what I got
And although
you almost broke my mind
Tore
up the papers and weren't very kind
You did
it all for me and now what's left behind
Is all
the love that's sure to stay, it won't go away, won't go away (it's lovely
darling)
Cause
everytime I see your face, I go all crazy
Everytime
I see your face, my memory comes hazy
Everytime
I see your face, I just want to kiss it
And it's
a lovely face and next time I just won't miss it
Evil
Island Home (Kevin Coyne - 1972) (CASE
HISTORY)
See
the sand and the white birds swooping low
I see
the sea and the dead fish floating by
I see
the grass as it's growing up my door
And hear
my dog as it's crying for his bone
Chorus:
This is my home, my evil island home (x2).
See the
stoat and the sharp-billed razorbill
You know
they're pecking away
At my
crumbling window sills
And the
ice on the mountain range below
Is starting
to melt
And we'll
soon be washed with snow
Chorus
I want
to fly
But they've
taken my wings away
I want
to run
But I
know I have to stay
I may
coax the beast
That
wanders on the shore
To lend
me his back
So I
can ride away once more
Chorus
Ey
Up Me Duck (Kevin Coyne - 1979)
(PEEL
SESSIONS )
Where
I come from, they're alright
It's beer and fags on a satdee night
They're
all Folk 'eros wi big red 'ands
They
use a language no-one understands
They
say, Dunna say Wunna, it inna polite
But you're
alright if you get the shopping right
Get the salt peas and wash your shot
And give the wife all you've got (don't take no nonsense)
Chorus: Ey up, ey up, Ey up me duck (x2).
Down by the cut, near Lovers Lane
There's plenty to see, plenty to gain
You may meet your future wife on a grassy bank
She's slim and beautiful now but she'll soon look like a tank
Keep her to order, don't let her mess about
You don't want no lip you don't want to shout
After 55 years, you'll love each other well
You'll never admit married life was 'ell
Alright
chorus
Where're they all? They're all coming home. Can you see them? Oh they're all singing and marching. Here they come. Come on Albert, let's have you. Ernie! Oh look at Mavis, don't she looks miserable! Come on. Come on Terry! All together now, 1 2 3
Chorus
(x2)
Smack
that child, he's got ideas beyond this station
Much help from Tony James for this one, thank you.
Also thanks to John Rogers: "Eye up me duck is Derbyshire dialect (where I live and of course where Kevin was born and bred). In British English often birds are used as terms of endearment, even to strangers. Which bird varies from region to region. In Edinburgh men and women are often referred to as "hen" in other parts of the UK men are often called "cock". In Derbyshire its "duck" for men and women and "eye up" just means hello or how are you".
And to Simon Randle: "Just wanted to correct a couple of lyrics in Ey Up Me Duck.
Firstly it should be "DUNNA say WUNNA, it inna polite'. Translated that means 'Don't say you won't/wouldn't'
Second, its 'and wash your shot'. Shot is Derby dialect for shirt.
Finally, the term Ey Up Me Duck has nothing to do with the bird. The accent in Derby (and the rest of the East Midlands) is massively influenced by the old Norse (Viking) language, as Derby was one of the five boroughs of the Danelaw (Viking England). 'Ey Up' is derived from the old Norse 'Se Opp', which translates as 'See up' or 'Look up / eyes up'.
'Me Duck' is derived from Anglo Saxon greeting / term of endearment 'Mi Duka', which in modern English translates as 'Duke' or 'My Duke'.
So in its entirety, it's meaning is more like a salute. 'Look up my Duke'. of course it is widely used as a greeting but also continues as a term of endearment or pet name. For example, 'Yer cummin daan pub, duck?' or 'Aya sin me car keys anywhere, duck?'
So there you go!
I have only just stumbled on the work of Kevin Coyne. It's a crying shame but he doesn't seem to be remembered or celebrated at all in Derby. He really should be.
'Ey Up Me Duck' captures Derby so well, even to this day. His reference to people being "Folk 'eros wi big red 'ands" is a nod to Derby's working class industrial heritage. Folk from Derby needed to be good with their hands to work (and to a certain extent still do) due to the industries that the city was built on, such as the mills and the railways. It is still a city with a fine pub tradition (it's beer and fags on a satdee night).
Anyway, I hope you find the his information useful."
